If you have seen shimmering dots on a dupatta or co-ord set and wondered what they are, this guide explains muqaish and kamdani, the sparkle used in some of our festive pieces.
What they are
Muqaish and kamdani are traditional metallic embroidery techniques from Lucknow. Fine metallic thread or wire is worked into the fabric in tiny motifs, giving a soft shimmer that catches the light. The terms are often used together, and the exact usage can vary by maker.
How it differs from chikankari
Chikankari is white or tonal thread embroidery known for its shadow work and delicate stitches. Muqaish and kamdani add a metallic sparkle. Some pieces combine both, such as our Zoya sets.
Zoya co-ord sets ($89)
Royal blue, bottle green and festive red. See the Zoya collection.
Zoya chiffon dupattas ($30-$35)
The easiest way to add sparkle to an outfit you already own. See chiffon dupattas.

When to wear it
The sparkle suits evenings, Diwali, Eid and weddings. For daytime, choose a simple outfit and let the dupatta carry the shimmer.
