Chikankari is often thought of as summer wear, but it works in winter too when you layer it well. This guide shows how to wear hand-embroidered kurtis and co-ord sets through a Canadian winter.
Layer over the outfit
- Long coat: a camel, black or grey wool coat over a long kurta or co-ord set keeps the embroidery visible at the hem and cuffs.
- Blazer or cardigan: a tailored blazer works for the office, and a long cardigan for casual days.
- Scarf or shawl: a solid scarf adds warmth without competing with the embroidery.
Layer under the outfit
Choose the right fabric
Chanderi silk is lustrous and light, good for winter events.
Rayon flows well under a coat.
Modal cotton is soft and smooth, easy to layer.
Compare them in our fabric guide.
Bottoms and shoes
Pair a kurta with dark jeans or trousers and ankle boots for everyday winter wear. For events, wear a co-ord set with closed juttis or boots and warm socks.
Care in winter
Dry air and static can cling to light fabrics. Hang pieces to air, and follow the hand wash guide for washing.
